Valhalla ReelsNordic cinema, screened monthly in Leeds

One film a month, from somewhere cold

We're a small film club in Leeds. Third Thursday of the month, a film from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland or Iceland, subtitled, in a chapel hall with sixty chairs and a decent projector.

Started in 2016 by two people who were tired of waiting for anything Nordic to reach a Leeds screen that wasn't a festival. Still the same two people doing the booking.

When

Third Thursday, doors 19:00, film 19:30. Home by half ten.

Where

The Old Chapel Hall, Meanwood Road. Sixty seats, no raked floor, so arrive early if you're short.

How much

£6 on the door, £30 for the season of eight. Under-25s half price.

After

The pub two doors down. Entirely optional and where the actual film club happens.

What we show

Feature films, mostly from the last thirty years, always in the original language with subtitles. We lean towards things that are hard to see otherwise — a Finnish film with no UK distribution, an Icelandic first feature, an older Danish title that streaming has quietly dropped.

We are not a Bergman society. He turns up perhaps once a season, and we get letters about it either way.

Titles are announced by email two weeks before, once the licence is confirmed. We don't advertise a title we haven't cleared — see licensing.

First visit is free. Turn up, sit at the back, see whether it's your sort of thing. Nobody will make you introduce yourself, which we understand is the main worry.
